How we keep your systems secure

A frequently asked question when looking at managed services for your business is often around how we keep your endpoint systems secure.

At Sound Networks, updates matter to us because:

  • The threat landscape is constantly changing and evolving.
  • Operating system updates, firewall firmware updates and AV maintenance are not just preferable for business protection, they are an essential cornerstone of your cyber-security stance.
  • Unpatched and unsupported software is often the entry point for a breach.

Why traditional security is failing

Sound Networks handle these updates proactively via our remote monitoring and management agents which ensure that all available security updates are installed within 7 days of release. We patch client computers during working hours Monday to Friday to make sure that updates are installed when made available.

Third party applications are also monitored and patched where possible - if they cannot be updated automatically, we will flag this with you and add these to your risk register.

It’s important that we are honest with you and let you know that it is not always possible to automate all updates, but when we assess your IT, this includes creating a list of the software which you need to run the business and removing that which is not required which helps to reduce the attack surface. During this discovery process we can ascertain which software can be automatically patched and which needs to be completed manually.

Based on the above information

We can then build a strategy to keep all your software up to date.

Firewalls

Just like your PC or Mac, your firewall runs an operating system which will need patching from time to time as well, this is called firmware. Typically, these updates do not occur as often as those for client computers, but this doesn’t detract from their importance. It’s important to remember that we are talking about the gateway to your network here.

Consequently, this means that where possible automatic firmware updates should always be turned on in your firewall’s settings either locally or within it’s cloud management console. Automatic updates are normally carried out automatically overnight at a time which will not cause any disruption to most. Manual updates will need to be planned to work around your schedule as these will cause short outages while your firewall reboots and completes any firmware update.

Anti-Virus and EDR

Traditional Anti-Virus is now considered to be ineffective against 80% of threats at large, but that 20% balance is still a lot of threat! This means that maintaining a reputable Anti-Virus product installed and fully up to date remains critical to your endpoint protection. Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware working with Endpoint Detection and Response systems run continuously in the background on your machines scanning and monitoring to protect you from known and zero-day threats. All these systems are centrally managed and monitored by Sound Networks to ensure that updates are installed when made available which can sometimes be multiple times a day.

Endpoint Security is just one but very important part of your overall security picture. It requires systems and processes to stay on top of and is never ‘finished’, there will always be more updates to install as vulnerabilities and weaknesses are discovered and published.
