Hidden Malware

How to spot hidden malware

At Sound Networks we are seeing more and more instances of hackers sending out emails with malignant payloads - in other words, malware. So, don't open emails and attachments from payloads unless you have completed your own due diligence first.

Know what to look for

Malware is a devious threat. But if you know what to look for, you can reduce your chances of falling victim:

  • Your devices are running sluggishly: If your phone or laptop's performance has noticeably dropped, it may be riddled with malware.
  • Unwelcome and insalubrious Pop-Ups: If you're seeing a lot of these, it's not a good sign.
  • Poor battery life: Malware can swiftly drain your battery due to the increased load on your device.
  • Data usage through the roof: If your internet speed has dropped off a cliff and or you are burning through your data - malware may be the culprit.

So, how do I check for Malware?

Let’s take a look to see how this can be achieved:

02

Install Antivirus

Antivirus software can be your friend. It will perform a full sweep of your device and remove the threats which it recognises.

Take a close look at Your Apps

Inspect all of them. Get rid of the ones you don't recognise installing or don't use.

Check resource usage

On a PC, check task manager and look for programs with strange names using large amounts of resources.

Inspect Browser Extensions

Investigate installed and active browser extensions. Remove those not in use or that you do not recognise.

What to do if you think you have found Malware!?

First thing, remain calm! Here's what to do:

Start a full system scan. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software.

Check for updates. Ensure that all of your programs and operating systems are as up to date as they can be.

Reset Passwords. Change all your important passwords for new complex passwords straight away. Malware may have stolen any cached credentials.

Backup your valuable data. Make sure to create backups of important files in a safe place, such as cloud storage or backup provider.

Take time to think before clicking

Don't click on any unknown links or download files from untrusted locations.

Make passwords strong
